Serhiy Honcharuk: the development of science in Ukraine is the business of each of us

"At a certain point, we realized that we are not worse off, we are better off.” (trans.), — Serhiy Volodymyrovych Goncharuk shares his experience in an interview with the Odesa Media news agency. This is how the doctor characterizes the level of dental services that he and his colleagues have managed to achieve not only thanks to their responsible daily work, but also due to their own contribution to the field of medical sciences in Ukraine.

Despite the difficulties and funding problems that the Ukrainian scientific community has faced in recent decades, after graduating from ONMedU, Serhiy Volodymyrovych Honcharuk did not abandon research activities, and in addition to teaching at Odessa Medical University and medical practice, he continued to work on his own ideas at the Institute of Dentistry of the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS).

The results of this work were: a dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences; patents for treatment methods (apical periodontitis and various types of chronic stomatitis); patents for medical drugs (phytogels and agents for reparative osteogenesis); and almost two dozen scientific publications in co-authorship with colleagues of the institute in authoritative periodicals of Ukraine, where the latest methodologies and issues of dental diseases in patients of different ages and health conditions were considered. As part of his scientific work, the doctor conducted experimental and clinical studies involving several dozen patients, developed recipes for new oral care products for therapeutic and prophylactic purposes.

Over the years of teaching practice, Serhiy Goncharuk has become the personification of a wise mentor for many students and young specialists, who motivates and inspires a new generation of future doctors to realize themselves in Ukraine. Thus, the leading specialist and chief physician of the Dental Center is Serhiy Volodymyrovych's former student, orthopedist-gnathologist Oleg Pavlyuk, with whom they have worked side by side for many years to build a new model of dentistry in modern Odessa.

Not the least role in the scientific achievements of Serhiy Volodymyrovych Honcharuk is played by his constant interaction with leading dentists in Europe, the USA, and Japan, which allows him not only to gain new knowledge, but also to share his own experience during educational seminars, lecture courses for colleagues from Ukraine and abroad, as well as through participation in international medical conferences.

A special pride of Serhiy Volodymyrovych, as a doctor of the highest category and a scientist, is the interest of foreign colleagues in obtaining professional skills in Ukraine and even in employment in Odessa. All this is a significant contribution to the positive presentation of our state, as well as its scientific medical environment at the global level and lays a solid foundation for further cooperation in innovative projects in the dental field.
